Angola Route Detail

1. Cape Town to Noordoewer (SA / Namibia border) via the N7
2. Noordoewer to Oshikango (Namibia / Angola Border) via the B1
3. Hand docs to agent and wait in queue and wait for customs to clear
4. Once cleared, truck crosses to Angolan side where docs are again submitted to customs for clearance
5. Once cleared, the driver must leave the camp area before 17h00, otherwise he has to wait until the following day
6. From the border to Xangongo the road is fairly good and is tarred
7. From there you cross the Kunene river over a low water bridge which can be under water during the rain season, one then has to wait until the water subsides before driving across. A new bridge is under construction
8. From Xangongo to Chitemba, approximately 100 km, the road is very bad and in certain places one cannot travel faster than 20kph, and in the rainy season it is even worse
9. From Lubango to Cacula the road is tarred
10. Past Quilengues is a small mountain pass that is very difficult to negotiate when it is raining. Trucks can be delayed for more than a day at this point
11. After the pass the road is a dirt road up until about 100 km before Benguela where the road is tarred
12. There is another mountain pass just before Sumbe which becomes very slippery during the rainy season and also causes delays
13. From there on to Luanda the road is good

Botswana’s total road network is approximately 18 000 kilometres, of which approximately 6 000 kilometres is paved.

Botswana has become an important trade gateway between Gauteng and the West Coast via the Trans-Kalahari Corridor, a 1 900 kilometre road link from Johannesburg / Pretoria to the Port of Walvis Bay.

Roads in the DRC are generally in poor condition and are often impassable during the rainy season.

The road between Kasumbalesa and Lubumbashi is paved and in fair condition. The road from Lubumbashi to Kolwezi is in very poor condition

Kenya has approximately 63 265 kilometres of interurban roads of which approximately 8 933 kilometres are paved.

There is over 100 000 kilometres of rural roads and 14 500 kilometres of urban roads creating a total road infrastructure of 177 765 kilometres.

Kenya has some of the busiest roads south of the Sahara but maintenance is often neglected.

Lesotho has a network of over 2000 kilometres of tarred road which is supplemented by over 6000 kilometres of gravel roads and (murrum) dirt roads.

The tarred roads connecting the major towns are good.

The use of large vehicle combinations, ie tri-Axles, superlinks etc. are subject to the location of the destination town. A lot of the towns are situated in outlying areas which are accessible by very narrow and winding mountain roads.

The road network in Malawi comprises of approximately 14000 km of which about 3000 km is tarred.

Malawi’s main highways are in a generally fair condition. The secondary roads are in a poor state of repair and are in the main impassable during the rainy season (November to April).


Mozambique Route Detail

1. Johannesburg to Lebombo / Ressano Garcia (SA / Mozambique Border) via N4

3. At Ressano Garcia customs will process a Memorandum document which is issued to the driver enabling him to proceed to Frigo in Maputo for final customs clearance
4. Cargo has to be cleared at Frigo before moving on to final destination
5. Customs clearance at Frigo can take between 24 – 48 hours

2. Maputo to Chimoio via EN1 to Inchope, EN6 from Inchope to Chimoio

The road network in Mozambique is about 30 000 kilometres of which only 10 000 kilometres is tarred. The road network is now 90% passable compared with only 65% in 2004.

A new bridge over the Zambezi river, linking Sofala and Zambezia provinces has recently been completed. This bridge is a key link in the countries main South – North highway and has replaced the unreliable ferry service over the Zambezi.
